Mrs. Maria Butler: Secretary
Maria H Butler is a 1970 graduate of LeMoyne-Owen college in Memphis, TN with a BS in elementary education and minor in history. She has completed more than 30 hours of graduate studies in special education at Tennessee State University in Nashville.
Maria was also a participant in the JFK – Teacher Corp. she began her teaching career with a team of 5 other dedicated and enthusiastic TC volunteers and a team leader in Memphis. Upon completion of her two years commitment to the Memphis City schools, Maria accepted employment at Father Bertrand’s as a 3rd grade teacher. She resigned from that position and move with her family to Nashville, TN.
October 1st 1975 Maria took a teaching position with the state of Tennessee at the Tennessee Prison for Women (TPW). While at TPW Maria was promoted to Principal at McCall School in 1976, and Associate warden of treatment in 1981. Returning to her first passion in 1984, she transferred to the then Tennessee State Penitentiary (TSP). With the upcoming closing of TSP in 1988, Maria transferred to Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (RMSI), where she works to date. Yet 1997 brought a change for her. Due to cutbacks and a reduction in force, the RMSI educational staff had to let go several employees and Maria was one. She continued with the state working in Vocational Rehabilitation as a counselor. Maria however returned to RMSI in 2000. She is still employed there today.
Maria is active in her church and her community.
